Zoo!

Today the Overlord and I went to the zoo with some friends (the same ones who invited us to the Big Pool). Her local library has a DVD about the zoo, and when you check it out and back in, you get 4 free tickets to the zoo. Children under 2 are free, so all 5 of us got into the zoo for free. Quite the deal.

I was up at 6 and the Overlord at 7:30 to make it to their house by 8:30, where we all piled into her van (the Overlord's car seat was moved into the van, of course.)We sang songs as requested by Her Supreme Smallness and arrived at the zoo by 10.

First we visited the elephant. Her Excited Excellence proudly called out "ears!" and "tail!". Then we visited the warthogs. She deigned to speak their language, calling out "oink!" and "tunnel!". She wanted to climb in their tunnels, so we had a discussion that the sidewalk was for little girls only, and the tunnels were for the warthogs only. She was not pleased.

We visited the parakeets next. The zoo sold "Seed Sticks" which consisted of seeds and little pellets of bird food stuck on a small stick. I got one for each of the kids and they had fun feeding the parakeets that flew freely in an aviary. The picture shows the Overlord's hand, and the people across the way are our friends (flowered shirt and shorts, pink shirt and shorts, and green shirt with Goofy hat).

One of the parakeets even landed on her stick.

She seemed to enjoy it, telling me "Birds! Tweet!" and "Eat birds!" which is her way of saying "Feed the birds."

On our way to see the lions, Her Cuteness saw a photo opportunity. Never one to pass this up, she exclaimed "Tunnel!". She climbed up the little steps behind it and posed all by herself. This picture was all her idea.

She liked the lion, but once she realized he was taking his nap, she told us all "Shh! Lion sleep. Nap." There was a volunteer there answering questions who let the Countess of Cuteness touch a lion skull.

She posed for another picture on the way to the meerkats.

We moved on to the African Plains where we saw zebras, giraffes, a rhino and ostriches, all together.

There was a walkway constructed so that it was flat to us but in the tops of the trees for the habitats it passed through. We saw birds, lemurs and monkeys here. There was a huge nest, and of course her Adorableness climbed in and had some fun being a bird.

From there, we moved on to Asia, with hornbills, sun bears and tigers. The Overlord was quite disappointed that the tiger was hiding, but after a while he came out and she yelled out "Kitty!"

We also saw pandas, which the Overlord promptly named "Bear."

There was a naked mole rat exhibit, which the little ones could enter and exit by crawling through a tunnel. Outside of the exhibit was a playground of tunnels. She had fun pretending to be a mole rat.

All in all, we spent over 4 hours at the zoo. The Overlord took an hour nap in the van on the way back, and talked with me on the way back to our house. I was planning for her to continue her nap, but her daddy was home early because of the holiday weekend, so she was too excited about this to nap. She ended up going to bed at 5:30. She woke up about 8:30 crying, so that both of us went to comfort her. She cried and rolled around for a while, and then passed quite a lot of gas. She felt better but still couldn't settle down, so I ended up sleeping next to her crib for the rest of the night. With me in her room, she fell asleep until the morning. What an adventure!
